It’s been my dream, for a long time now, to go to Mexico for Dia de Muertos – the Mexican Day of the Dead festival, celebrated from 31 October to 2 November every year. I’m in love with the imagery around the festival, the decorated sugar candy skulls, the elaborate face paints, skeleton puppets and mannequins, colourful paper cut out flags, the marigold flowers, fruit and flamboyant shrines. Despite the spooky name, the festival is really a very positive celebration of life, remembering with fondness, love and humour those who have died and eating, drinking and dancing with family and friends that are still here. It seems to me a very positive way to acknowledge death, which is, after all, an inescapable part of everyone’s life.

I haven’t yet made it to Mexico for Dia de Muertos (it’s still on my bucket list) so this year I’ve decided to indulge my love of all things Day of the Dead with a Mexican Supper Club at our place in Saintfield.

We’re celebrating  Dia de Muertos with a feast of our favourite Mexican dishes from across the country – from the fish tacos of Baja California to the slow-cooked spicy, citrussy pibil of the tropical Yucatan.  There will be aperitifs & canapes around our outdoor fire pit (weather permitting) and then we’ll all go inside for feasting and drinking.

Baja California Fried Fish Tacos or Scallion Tacos

Trio of Sopes:

Avocado, Crispy Leeks and Shrimp or Pickled Radish

Slow-cooked Chicken Pibil with Pink Pickled Onions
OR Roasted Sweet Potato, Shallots & Mushrooms in a Pumpkin Seed Sauce
Mexican Slaw, Rice & Beans

The drinks: This event is BYO. Please bring a bottle (or more) of your favourite tipple. A welcome drink will be provided plus a small taste of craft beer matched with a few of the courses.

The cost: £35 per person (plus a £1 booking fee), for a five-course menu plus a few extras.
Dietary Requirements: Veggie options are available for all courses (see menu above) but please let us know in advance if you require the veggie option. For all other dietary requirements just let us know when you book and we’ll try our absolute best to accommodate you.
