We are delighted to be collaborating with The Narrows Social, a local centre of food, arts and music in Portaferry, for an evening of food inspired by both our Asian travels and the wild food available in and around Strangford Lough.
The Narrows Social, formerly a restaurant and hotel and now a vibrant community space and B&B, is based in a gorgeous historic building overlooking the channel (The Narrows) that connects Strangford Lough with the Irish Sea. We first met Celia & David, the brains behind the project, when we attended their Foraging Workshop in May. It was an inspiring and informative day foraging for edible seaweed and sea vegetables on the Strangford coastline, before coming together for a picnic and BBQ of our wild finds on the shores of the Lough.
I was struck by the similarities between the taste of some of the sharp and spicy herbs and sea vegetables we gathered in Strangford with the aromatic herbs I’d come across while cooking and travelling in Asia, particularly Vietnam. With this menu we’ve combined the flavours of Asia with foraged foods and beautiful local Northern Irish produce.
If you fancy staying down in Portaferry (no worries about driving home) then Celia offers B&B with beautiful views plus The Narrows Social Refugio, a very cute self contained apartment in the courtyard and available to book on Airbnb.
The menu: A feast inspired by our travels in Asia and the wild plants & herbs found round the Strangford coastline. Think of fresh seafood, seaweed, aromatic herbs, chilli, ginger, coconut & sea vegetables. With a wee taste of Potin to get the party started.

The drinks: This event is BYO. Please bring a bottle (or more) of your favourite tipple. A welcome cocktail will be provided plus a small taste of craft beer with three of the courses.
