In 2017 we converted our old Cow Byre into a lovely agriculturally-rustic event space. It’s a great space for a little party or a sit-down meal for 20 or 30 people. However, it’s only really suitable for summer and autumn events due to a lack of heating. But we have a plan…
In April and May 2018 we will be building a wood-fired clay pizza oven in a corner of the Cow Byre. Once complete, we can light the fire when we need to heat the space for an event – and more importantly we can cook and eat delicious wood-fired pizza, slow roasts and breads whenever we want.
Last year, Erin and I attended weekly sessions at Helen’s Bay Organics helping to build their clay pizza oven. It was great fun, a big success and a great way to learn! We’ll be repeating the experience at ours and inviting anyone who is interested in making clay oven from scratch to come along, help out and learn on the job.
We will have weekly drop-in workshops on Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm throughout April and May. You can join us for just one of the workshops or come along every week to see each step in the process. Regardless of how many you attend, we’ll email you a pizza oven building info sheet so you can plan your own pizza oven project.
If everything goes to plan, we’ll also be celebrating the completion of the Oven on Tuesday 22 May for everyone who has attended the workshops, which will of course, include lots of wood fired pizza.
The build: We’ll be constructing a clay pizza oven from scratch over 6 evenings. Activities will involve laying brick to form the oven floor, constructing a sand dome to form the oven cavity, mixing sand, clay and straw, shaping and positioning clay bricks, forming an entrance and chimney.
The time: from 6:30 to 8:30pm on Tuesday evenings from Tuesday 3 April to Tuesday 8 May 2018.
The place: The Edible Flower, 121 Middle Road, Saintfield, Co. Down, BT24 7LS. We’ll be working outside in the cow byre, so come wrapped up warm.
The refreshments: We’ll provide simple refreshments at the workshops. Tea or coffee and a wee snack.
The cost: £5 for each workshop to cover the cost of refreshments. Please buy tickets in advance so we know how many are attending and can plan the weekly workshops accordingly.
The plan: If everything goes to plan, the 6 workshops will cover the following build activities:
Week 1 – Tuesday 3 April 2018 – The plinth and the oven floor
Week 2 – Tuesday 10 April 2018 – The dome
Week 3 – Tuesday 17th April 2018 – The first clay layer
Week 4 – Tuesday 24th April 2018 – The entrance and brick arch and chimney
Week 5 – Tuesday 1st May 2018 – The insulation layer
Week 6 – Tuesday 8th May 2018 – The shell layer
The Celebration – Tuesday 22 May 2018 – The pizza party!
