The darkest days of the year are almost upon us again, all the more reason to gather - to eat, drink and be merry. To decorate our homes with bright berries and scented evergreens, to light candles and fires against the gloom and to celebrate the turning of the year back toward the light. If that sounds delightful, then I invite you to join me for my 8th Winter Solstice supper club.
This year we will be feasting on some wintry favourites - think warming spiced apple, earthy chestnuts and mushrooms, crispy sage, maple-roasted root vegetables, slow-cooked venison, wine spiced pears and rich chocolate cake. But that is not all, alongside some classic dishes are some delectable surprises, sweet and savoury prawn har gow dumplings, zingy beetroot tostadas with smoky leeks and deliciously fragrant Turkish delight. I’ve so enjoyed putting together this menu and I can’t wait to share it with you all.
I’ll be hosting this supper club in the beautiful Mother of the Woods Retreat. Located between Saintfield and Lisburn this is a gorgeous Georgian house and retreat centre owned and run by Essential Nature Yoga.

Winter Solstice Supper Club @ Mother of the Woods Retreat
Thursday 19th, Friday 20th & Saturday 21st December 2024
On arrival:
Warming Glassdrumman apple juice with spiced rum
Homemade mushroom, chestnut & thyme sausage rolls
Feta fritters with chilli & rosemary honey
To start:
Emerald dumplings: Prawn, ginger and chive har gow
or Sweet potato, ginger and chive
To continue:
Beetroot tartare tostadas with a charred leek crema and crispy scallions
The main event:
Wild venison & stout pie with mushrooms & bacon
Roasted portobello mushrooms with crispy sage and sultana panettone stuffing
Roasted sprouts and squash with pecans and cranberries
Maple roasted parsnips & beets with freekeh, honey mustard dressing and kale crisps
Crispy roast potatoes with garlic mayo
To cheese:
Irish cheese, crackers and homemade preserves
For pudding:
Wine spiced poached pears with chocolate & almond cake and softly whipped cream
Round the fire pit:
Rosemary tea & homemade Turkish delight

The drinks: This event is BYO. Please bring a bottle (or more) of your favourite tipple. A welcome drink will be provided on arrival.
The time: 7pm on Thursday 19th, Friday 20th or Saturday 21st December 2024. If you are planning on booking a taxi or organising a lift we’d suggest organising that for 11pm.
The place: Mother of the Woods Retreat, 31 Back Road, Cargacreevy, Lisburn , BT27 6TR (please see the event confirmation email for full details on how to find the venue - but DO NOT go to the Back Road in Drumbo)
The cost: £70 per person (includes booking fees), for a six-course menu plus a few extras.
Keeping warm: This event will be hosted inside the beautiful dining spaces at Mother of the Woods. Weather permitting we may light the firepit at the end of the evening so please bring an extra layer or two to keep you cosy during around the fire pit.
Seating: You will be seated with other guests. If you are not comfortable sitting with other people then please do not book tickets as unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to seat groups separately.
Dietary Requirements: This menu is suitable for vegetarians. We can cater for dairy free/vegan guests, but you must let us know in advance if you are vegan/dairy free. Unfortunalely this menu is not suitable for gluten free guests. For all other dietary requirements just let us know when you book and we’ll try our absolute best to accommodate you.
Cancellation Policy: We have recently updated our cancellation policy and we now charge an administrative fee for cancellations up to one week in advance of the event. If you cancel less than one week before the event we cannot offer a refund unless we can resell your tickets. All tickets are transferable if you can find another guest to come in your place.
